Murder

So my sister called me today and asked me if i remembered this girl Kendra Keith. I told her of course were friends and worked together at subway in MA... She then tells me that she is being charged with assisting in a murder!!! Her boy friend (who i have met back in the day) killed somebody... Oh yeah and i know the person who was killed... crazy her is the news article

PITTSFIELD — Kendra Keith, a 19-year-old Pittsfield woman who helped Damien J. Lamb dispose of the body of Brandon LaBonte in February 2005, pleaded guilty as an accessory to murder in Berkshire Superior Court Friday and will serve no jail time.

Judge John A. Agostini placed Keith on five years probation on the condition that she continue counseling and have no contact with Lamb. The charge of accessory after the fact of murder carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in state prison.

Keith's plea comes six weeks after Lamb, 25, formerly of Becket, was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for strangling and beating LaBonte to death with a shovel on Feb. 16, 2005. Lamb is appealing the verdict.

Keith has been recuperating at a women's shelter at an undisclosed location where she receives counseling and treatment, according to her attorney, Timothy J. Shugrue. Shugrue noted that she was hospitalized a month after Lamb's trial for post-traumatic stress disorder.

"She's been bruised and battered by this, and she needs to be out of this area," Shugrue said, explaining why Keith left the Berkshires.

"She couldn't be in a better place than she is now. This ordeal has really altered and affected her life. She's really a good-hearted, nice person who was put in a bad position."

Shugrue said Keith's sentence was appropriate since she feared for her life. Lamb, her former boyfriend, was a judo and kickboxing expert who often reminded her of his father's reputed ties to motorcycle gangs.

"It was pretty evident that she was as much of a victim," Shugrue said, referring to Keith. "Kendra was a 17-year-old kid at the time who was shown a dead body and was afraid for her life. She did what she thought would save her own life.

"Obviously, the charges against her were serious," he continued, "but I also think the district attorney's office knew she wasn't a criminal. I think everyone recognized that she was a good kid put in a bad situation."

First Assistant District Attorney Paul J. Caccaviello said Keith's testimony against Lamb was the cornerstone of the prosecution's case.

"The commonwealth was comfortable with the recommendation given her level of cooperation and her participation in the investigation and prosecution of Damien Lamb," Caccaviello said. "We thought it important to acknowledge that by making the recommendation that we did."

Keith tearfully testified that she and Steven J. Fish, 22, helped Lamb drag LaBonte's body to a swamp and stashed it inside a beaver hut on an 83-acre property belonging to Lamb's mother and stepfather in Peru.

Police scoured the property with Fish's help, but never found the body. Prosecutors alleged that Lamb moved the body and destroyed it. One possible theory was that his mother, Nancy Lamb, may have brought the body to an incinerator where she disposes of animal carcasses as part of her job responsibilities at the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife in Pittsfield.

Authorities believed the murder was at least partially over a $150 debt, since Lamb had severely beaten LaBonte in a remote area of Washington town on Feb. 6, 2005, with the help of Fish and David A. Davies III, 21.

The cases against Davies and Fish are pending in Superior Court. Both face assault charges for helping Lamb beat LaBonte ten days before his death, and Fish also faces one count of being an accessory after the fact of murder.

Keith first met Lamb at the Chin Bo Jok Martial Arts Academy in Pittsfield, where she was a kickboxing instructor, and he also trained in the sport. According to Keith, they were romantically involved, but Lamb kept the relationship hidden and continued living with his girlfriend, Jennifer Murray, with whom he had a daughter.

On Feb. 17, 2005, Keith said Lamb came to her apartment at 3 a.m. and showed her the body inside the trunk of Murray's red Chevrolet Corsica. Keith claimed that he warned her to be his "good girl," to help him dispose of the body and never betray him.
